India named fastest‑growing major economy

India is the world’s fastest‑growing major economy, the International Monetary Fund concludes. The fund raised its growth forecasts sharply: India’s GDP is now projected to expand by about 7% in both the current and next year, up from prior estimates near 6.4%. That performance cements India’s role as a key driver of global activity.

The IMF cites favorable demographics, resilient consumer demand, and a sizable expansion of domestic market capacity as the main engines of the country’s outperformance. Strong services sector activity and the cumulative effect of structural reforms have also improved the business climate, enabling high economic growth even amid global trade instability.

Rapid expansion, however, is fueling price pressures. Inflation accelerated sharply in September, approaching a two‑year high and edging close to the upper bound of the central bank’s 2–6% target range. Food prices were the main catalyst, with food inflation jumping to 7.74% from 5.97% a month earlier. Managing price rises for essential goods will be a principal challenge for monetary authorities as they seek to preserve high economic growth without stoking persistent inflation.
