Italy Retail Sales Fall in March

In March 2025, retail sales in Italy experienced a 0.5% decline from the previous month, contrary to the anticipated 0.2% increase and contrasting with the 0.1% growth in February. This decrease was primarily influenced by reduced sales in both food items, which dropped by 0.5% compared to a 0.2% increase in February, and non-food products, which fell by 0.3% following no change in the previous month. Annually, there was a 2.8% reduction in retail trade, marking the sharpest decline since February 2021 and surpassing the slightly revised 1.4% decrease noted in the month before. The main contributors to this downturn were a 4.2% reduction in food sales and a 1.4% decline in sales of non-food products. Over the first quarter of the year, retail sales recorded a 0.2% decrease, following a 0.1% rise in the fourth quarter of 2024.
