Indian Rupee Holds Decline

The Indian rupee maintained its recent decline around 87.26 per USD on Friday, influenced by a strengthening US dollar as markets anticipated Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium. Market participants are looking for indications on the future path of interest rates in the United States. Earlier reports of weaker employment data had raised hopes for significant rate cuts, but cautious comments from the Fed and persistent inflation risks have influenced the market to predict a more moderate rate adjustment in September. The rupee also experienced increased demand for dollars from oil importers in the previous session; however, this was somewhat counteracted by sales from foreign banks and debt inflows. Continued foreign bank sales, proposed tax reductions in India, and US President Trump's discussions with Russian and Ukrainian leaders helped alleviate some pressure on the rupee. Despite this, the potential implementation of US tariffs on Indian goods and criticism regarding Russian oil purchases have weakened market sentiment, with experts forecasting further downward pressure on the rupee through September.
