In January 2026, Fiji experienced a 2.5% annual decline in consumer prices, following a stable index in December 2025. This decrease was predominantly attributed to a notable reduction in the prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, which plummeted by 7.6% compared to a minor 0.1% increase in the previous month. Other notable decreases were observed in transportation, which fell by 4.8% after a 5.3% decline in December, as well as housing, which dropped by 2.9% following a 2.2% decrease. The prices of clothing and footwear also experienced a slight reduction of 2.8% compared to a 2.7% decrease earlier. In addition, there were downward trends in the cost of recreation and culture, which decreased by 2.0%, down from 1.7%, and in furnishings, household equipment, and routine household maintenance, which saw a 0.6% decline following a 1.3% drop. Meanwhile, price hikes were recorded in alcoholic beverages and tobacco, rising by 8.3% from a previous 6.4%, as well as in education, which saw a stable increase of 0.5%, and in miscellaneous goods and services, which climbed by 5.8% from 5.3%. On a month-to-month basis, consumer prices decreased by 0.8% in January, reversing the 1.2% increase seen in December, and marking the first monthly decrease in three months.
