The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk index, which tracks freight rates for vessels transporting dry commodities, rose about 2% on Wednesday to 2,064 points, its highest level since March 9, after a modest decline in the previous session. The capesize index, covering vessels that typically carry 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, jumped 3.4% to 2,986 points. The panamax index, which reflects rates for ships that usually transport 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, advanced 2.1% to 1,891 points. In contrast, the smaller supramax index fell 1.3% to 1,240 points.
