German Retail Sales Contract Again in February, But Pace of Decline Eases

German retail sales fell again in February 2026, but the pace of contraction slowed compared with the previous month, according to data updated on 31 March 2026. On a month-over-month basis, retail turnover decreased by 0.6% in February, following a sharper 0.9% decline in January 2026.

The figures, measured as month-over-month changes, indicate that while consumer spending remains under pressure, the downward trend may be moderating. January’s reading reflected a 0.9% drop from December, while February’s 0.6% fall represents a slightly less severe pullback from January levels. Investors and policymakers are likely to watch upcoming releases closely for signs of whether German consumers will stabilize or continue to retrench in the coming months.
