Speculators Deepen Bearish Bets on Kiwi as CFTC NZD Net Shorts Widen

Net speculative positioning in the New Zealand dollar has turned more negative, with traders increasing their bearish bets against the currency, according to the latest CFTC data released on 17 April 2026.

The CFTC NZD speculative net positions indicator fell further into negative territory, deteriorating from -36.1K contracts previously to -42.3K. This widening net short position suggests that market participants have become more pessimistic on the outlook for the New Zealand dollar, potentially reflecting concerns over the country’s economic momentum, relative interest rate dynamics, or broader risk sentiment.

The shift underscores continued pressure on the Kiwi in global currency markets, as speculative investors appear more inclined to sell into any rallies rather than position for a sustained rebound at this stage.
