Italy’s HICP Inflation Eases Marginally to 3.2% Year-on-Year in May

Italy’s Harmonised Index of Consumer Prices (HICP) edged down slightly in May 2026, with the annual inflation rate easing to 3.2% year-on-year from 3.3% previously. The updated figures, released on 16 June 2026, confirm a modest deceleration in price growth compared with the same month a year earlier.

Both the current and previous readings are based on year-over-year comparisons, measuring how prices in May 2026 and the prior month evolved against their respective levels a year ago. While the slowdown from 3.3% to 3.2% is marginal, it suggests a tentative step toward stabilisation in consumer prices within the euro area’s third-largest economy.

The slight cooling in HICP inflation may offer some relief to consumers and policymakers, although the rate remains elevated enough to keep inflation dynamics in focus for the coming months.
