Mozambique GDP Growth Subdued in Q1

Mozambique’s economy grew by just 0.1% year-on-year in Q1 2026, following an upwardly revised 5.1% expansion in the previous quarter. This was the second consecutive quarter of growth—though still very modest—after the recession triggered by the crisis that followed the October 2024 general elections.

Economic activity was supported mainly by the tertiary sector, which increased by 3.5%. Growth was led by hotels and restaurants (+5.1%) and trade and repair services (+4.5%), with transport, communications, and financial services also making positive contributions. The secondary sector expanded by 3.2%, driven by gains in utilities, manufacturing, and construction.

By contrast, the primary sector contracted by 4.8%, weighed down by a sharp 21.6% drop in mining, which more than offset modest growth in agriculture (+2.2%) and fishing (+0.9%).
