Greece Jobless Rate Hits Over 17-Year Low

Greece’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 8.1% in May 2026, down from a downwardly revised 9.1% in April, reaching its lowest level since November 2008. The number of unemployed decreased by 48.0 thousand compared to the previous month, dropping to 383.7 thousand — the lowest figure in more than seventeen years — and was down by 29.6 thousand on a yearly basis. Unemployment remained markedly higher among women than men, at 11.7% versus 5.0%, respectively. Meanwhile, the number of people outside the labour force — individuals under 75 who are neither employed nor actively seeking employment — increased by 25.1 thousand month-on-month to 2,980 thousand, but was 24.6 thousand lower than a year earlier. The total number of employed persons rose by 18.7 thousand from the previous month to 4,353 thousand.
