US Job Cuts Fall to 6-Month Low

US-based employers announced 45,849 job cuts in June 2026, the lowest monthly total since December 2025. This figure was down 53% from May and 4% lower than in June 2025.

The technology sector reported the largest number of cuts, at 15,503, followed by services (4,296), food producers and manufacturers (3,955), and health care companies (2,761).

“The pace of layoffs cooled considerably in June, resembling the plans we saw last June and reflecting typical seasonal patterns in the summer months. That said, the cuts we’re seeing remain concentrated in technology, and AI continues to reshape how companies think about headcount,” said Andy Challenger of Challenger, Gray & Christmas.

From January through June, employers announced 443,604 job cuts, a 40% decline from the 744,308 cuts recorded in the first half of 2025, with technology accounting for 139,156 of this year’s total.

At the same time, employers announced plans to hire 10,933 workers in June, bringing year-to-date hiring intentions to 914,405 positions, 10% more than during the first six months of 2025.
