France Household Spending Unexpectedly Rises

Household consumption of goods in France rose by 0.4% month-on-month in June 2026, defying market expectations of a 0.1% decline and following a downwardly revised 0.3% increase in May. This marked the second consecutive month of growth in household spending, largely driven by higher energy consumption (up 1.4% vs 2.5% in May), reflecting continued growth in electricity usage and a rebound in unleaded petrol consumption.

Food consumption also recovered (0.6% vs -0.3% in May), supported by a pickup in agri-food demand, particularly beverages. In contrast, spending on engineered goods slipped 0.2% after remaining flat in the previous month. Expenditure on durable goods was unchanged after a 0.1% decline, while spending on other engineered goods was virtually stable (0.1% vs -0.8%). However, spending on textiles and clothing fell back (-1.4% vs 1.3%). On a year-on-year basis, household consumption in June edged up by 0.1%.
