New Zealand Building Permits Fall 3.6% in June

In June 2026, building consents for new dwellings in New Zealand fell 3.6% month-on-month, following an upwardly revised 4.9% decline in May. This marked the third monthly drop so far this year. A total of 3,741 new dwellings were approved, comprising 1,658 stand-alone houses, 1,614 townhouses, 132 retirement village units, and 67 apartments.

Over the year ended June 2026, 40,581 new dwellings were consented, an increase of 19% compared with the year ended June 2025. On a per capita basis, New Zealand issued 7.6 new dwelling consents per 1,000 residents, up from 6.4 per 1,000 a year earlier. The record high remains 13.4 new dwelling consents per 1,000 residents, set in the year ended December 1973.
