China Stocks Mixed as AI Concerns Persist

The Shanghai Composite slipped 0.1% to 3,805 on Tuesday, while the Shenzhen Component advanced 1.3% to 13,626, as investors weighed ongoing US-China tensions over advanced technology. Beijing has been seeking to stabilize relations ahead of President Xi Jinping’s planned September 24 visit to Washington. At the same time, reports suggest Chinese authorities view certain cutting-edge US AI models, including Anthropic’s Mythos, as potential national security threats, while US officials remain wary that Chinese companies may be using leading US AI systems to build rival models.

On the domestic front, investors turned their attention to upcoming economic releases, including trade and inflation figures. This follows the central bank’s reaffirmation of its stance to support growth through a moderately accommodative monetary policy, ensuring ample liquidity and fostering balanced credit expansion. Financial stocks continued to face selling pressure, with notable declines in Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (-2.1%), Agricultural Bank of China (-2.5%), and China Construction Bank (-1.8%).
