Germany’s imports rose 4.4% month-on-month to €123.9 billion in June 2026, the highest level since November 2022. This marked a sharp turnaround from the marginally revised 2.6% drop recorded in May and far exceeded market expectations of a 1.0% increase.
Imports from EU member states jumped 7.4%, reflecting a 7.5% increase in purchases from euro-area partners and a 7.3% rise in imports from non-euro-area EU countries. Imports from non-EU countries grew by 1.4%, supported by a 9.0% surge in shipments from China. This more than offset a steep 9.6% decline in imports from the United States and a 16.7% fall in purchases from the United Kingdom.
On a year-on-year basis, total imports advanced 14.0% in June, accelerating sharply from the 1.5% increase recorded in May. Over the first half of 2026, imports were up 4.4% compared with the same period a year earlier, reaching €711.6 billion.
