Romania’s economy contracted by 0.4% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, a milder downturn than market expectations of a 1.5% drop and an improvement from the 1.2% decline recorded in the previous three-month period, preliminary estimates show. This was the second consecutive quarter of annual economic contraction, though the pace of decline slowed markedly compared with the first quarter. On a seasonally adjusted quarter-on-quarter basis, GDP was flat, following a revised 0.1% decrease in the preceding quarter.
