As of August 20, 2026, the average US 30-year fixed mortgage rate edged down to 6.65%, from 6.67% the previous week. Freddie Mac Chief Economist Sam Khater noted that while the decline offers only modest relief to homebuyers, borrowers can still potentially save thousands of dollars by comparing lenders and securing the most favorable rate. One year earlier, the 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.58%. Over the same period, the average rate on a 15-year fixed-rate mortgage slipped to 5.95%, from 5.96% the previous week.
