Speculators Trim Bearish Bets on New Zealand Dollar as Net Shorts Narrow Sharply

Net speculative positions on the New Zealand dollar have become markedly less bearish, according to the latest Commitments of Traders (CFTC) data released on 28 August 2026. The CFTC NZD speculative net positions improved from -32.6K previously to -14.2K, signaling a significant reduction in net short exposure.

The shift suggests that traders are scaling back pessimistic bets against the kiwi, potentially reflecting changing sentiment around New Zealand’s economic outlook, relative yield prospects, or broader risk appetite. While positioning remains in negative territory, the move toward a smaller net short stance may indicate that some market participants see limited downside from current levels or are beginning to price in a more supportive backdrop for the currency.
