NZX 50 Muted Ahead of RBNZ Rate Decision

New Zealand shares were little changed on Wednesday morning, with the benchmark index hovering around 13,789. This followed losses in the previous session and left the market at its lowest level since August 17, a trough first hit on Tuesday, as investors awaited the Reserve Bank of New Zealand’s monetary policy decision later in the day.

Markets widely expect the RBNZ to deliver a 25-basis-point rate hike, extending its tightening cycle after the increase in May. Sentiment was also subdued as higher oil prices stoked inflation concerns and reinforced expectations of further policy tightening amid escalating tensions in the Middle East.

Sector performance was mixed: gains in communication services, industrials, and financials helped offset weakness in technology, consumer staples, and consumer discretionary stocks.

On the macroeconomic front, New Zealand building permits fell 4.3% month-on-month in July, following a 3.7% decline in June, underscoring ongoing softness in construction activity.

Among individual movers, Bankers Investment advanced 1.5% and Ebos Group added 0.9%, while A2 Milk and Fletcher Building slipped 0.7% and 0.5%, respectively.
