Japan’s Composite PMI Ticks Higher in August, Signaling Firmer Private-Sector Momentum

Japan’s private-sector activity strengthened in August, as the combined Manufacturing & Services Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 53.50 from a previous reading of 52.70 on a month-over-month comparison basis.

Both the previous and current indicators refer to August 2026 data, with the latest update released on 3 September 2026. The improvement of 0.8 points in the composite PMI underscores a further expansion in business activity, with the index remaining comfortably above the 50 threshold that typically separates growth from contraction.

On a month-over-month basis, the latest “Actual” figure (53.50) indicates that the pace of expansion in August outperformed the prior month’s momentum, which had been captured in the earlier 52.70 “Previous” comparison. This continued upward movement in the PMI suggests that Japan’s manufacturing and services sectors are gaining traction as the third quarter progresses.
