Slovakia Trade Balance Shifts to Deficit in July

Slovakia recorded a trade deficit of EUR 0.8 million in July 2026, reversing from a surplus of EUR 216.5 million in the same month a year earlier and falling short of market expectations for a EUR 96.2 million surplus. This was the country’s first trade deficit since January, as import growth outpaced that of exports.

On an annual basis, imports increased by 9.4% to EUR 9,062.8 million, driven primarily by a nearly 11% rise in purchases of machinery and transport equipment. Imports from EU member states were up by almost 13%, while imports from non-EU countries declined by nearly 4%.

Exports rose 6.6% year-on-year to EUR 9,062.0 million, supported mainly by a more than 6% increase in shipments of machinery and transport equipment. Exports to the EU grew by nearly 7%, and exports to non-EU countries also advanced by almost 7%.

For the January–July 2026 period, Slovakia’s trade surplus widened to EUR 1,655.1 million, compared with EUR 1,458.4 million in the same period of 2025.
