France Industrial Output Misses Expectations

Industrial production in France declined by 0.4% month-on-month in July 2026, defying market expectations of a 0.3% rebound following a revised 0.1% drop in June. Manufacturing output fell by 0.8%, after a 1% decrease in the previous month, with production down across nearly all major sectors.

The steepest decline came from transport equipment manufacturing, which contracted by 2.8% after a 3.8% drop in June. Output of other industrial products fell by 0.5% for the second consecutive month. Production of electrical, electronic, and computer equipment slipped by 0.8%, reversing a 0.2% gain in the prior period, while food processing output was broadly unchanged at -0.1%.

In contrast, output in extractive industries, energy, and water increased by 0.9%, though at a slower pace than the 3.2% rise recorded in June. This growth was supported by higher electricity production and consumption during the second heat wave.

On a year-on-year basis, industrial production fell by 0.5%, following a 0.1% decline in June. However, over the three months to July, production rose by 0.8%.
