China Stocks Mixed as Growth Concerns Persist

The Shanghai Composite Index slipped 0.3% on Tuesday to 3,875, its lowest level in more than a month, while the Shenzhen Component Index added 0.3%. A mixed set of economic indicators reinforced concerns that China’s recovery remains fragile.

Fixed-asset investment fell 7.2% in the January–August period, the sharpest decline for that timeframe since January–April 2020. Retail sales growth also weakened, slowing to 0.4% year-on-year in August, a three-month low. The unemployment rate ticked up to 5.3% in August from 5.2% in July, reaching a five-month high.

There were some offsets: the housing price index declined 3% year-on-year in August, the smallest drop since December 2025, and industrial production growth accelerated to 5.2% from 4.5% in July.

Overall, China’s growth remains at risk of undershooting the government’s 4.5%–5.0% annual target for a second consecutive quarter, heightening expectations for additional policy support. Among notable decliners, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL) fell 1.4%, Zhongji Innolight lost 1.3%, and Suzhou TFC Optical Communication dropped 2.3%.
