US 30-Year Mortgage Rate Rises Further

The US 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.95% as of September 17, 2026, rising for the fourth straight week and up from 6.76% a week earlier. The rate is now at its highest level since January 2025 and is edging closer to the 7% threshold. One year ago, the 30-year fixed rate stood at 6.26%.

The recent increase follows the Federal Reserve’s latest hike in its benchmark interest rate, and borrowing costs show little sign of easing, putting additional pressure on prospective homebuyers.

The 15-year fixed-rate mortgage also climbed, averaging 6.26%, its highest reading since January 2025, up from 6.09% the previous week and 5.41% a year earlier.
