TSX Slips as Oil Rises

The S&P/TSX Composite Index slipped 0.2% to close at 35,807 on Friday, as rising oil prices and ongoing supply concerns weighed on sentiment. Canadian government bond yields inched higher amid persistent, energy-driven inflation worries, pushing up borrowing costs and adding pressure on equities.

Financials ended mixed: Fairfax Financial declined 2.6% and RBC dipped 0.2%, while TD Bank gained 0.6%. Miners retreated after posting sharp gains on Thursday, despite the continued strength in gold prices. Agnico Eagle fell 1.1%, Barrick lost 1.5%, and WPM was down 1%.

Technology shares were also mixed. Shopify slipped 0.4%, hurt by weakness in major US hyperscalers, whereas Celestica rose 0.7% and Constellation Software advanced 0.5%, supported by strength among chipmakers on Wall Street. For the week, the S&P/TSX Composite Index rose 0.4%.
