German Retail Sales Slump Eases in August, Year-on-Year Decline Narrows

Germany’s retail sector showed tentative signs of stabilization in August 2026, as the pace of decline in sales slowed on an annual basis. Year-over-year retail sales fell 0.4% in August, a marked improvement from the 2.5% drop recorded in July 2026.

The data, updated on 30 September 2026, indicate that while consumer spending remains under pressure compared to a year earlier, the contraction is moderating. Both the current and previous readings compare each respective month’s performance with the same month a year ago, suggesting that the worst of the recent year-over-year declines may be easing.

For economists and market participants, the softer decline could hint at a gradual bottoming-out in German retail activity, though the sector has yet to return to positive growth on an annual basis.
