US imports jumped by $17.2 billion to a record $420.8 billion in August 2026, pushing the trade deficit wider to $105.6 billion from a revised $92.8 billion in July. The increase was driven primarily by a $9.1 billion rise in imports of industrial supplies and materials, led by crude oil and nonmonetary gold. Imports of capital goods also climbed by $6.2 billion, reflecting stronger demand for semiconductors and other industrial machinery, more than offsetting a decline in computer accessories. Services imports were largely unchanged overall, as higher transport services imports were balanced by lower payments for the use of intellectual property and reduced travel-related imports.
