Speculative Bullish Bets on U.S. Crude Oil Ease as Net Longs Slip Below 100K

Speculative interest in U.S. crude oil futures softened in the latest reporting period, with net long positions slipping below the 100,000 mark. According to data updated on 09 October 2026, CFTC crude oil speculative net positions fell to 99.1K, down from a previous level of 109.5K.

The decline in net long positions suggests that hedge funds and other large speculators have become more cautious on the short-term outlook for crude prices, trimming bullish bets or adding to short positions. While the shift is modest, the move under 100K may signal a cooling of speculative enthusiasm following the prior reading, when positioning was more aggressively tilted toward further price gains.
