U.S. mortgage applications continued to decline in the latest week, but at a slower pace than before, according to Mortgage Bankers Association data updated on 14 October 2026. The index fell 2.7% week-over-week, improving from a 4.2% drop in the previous week.
Both figures are measured on a week-over-week basis, comparing each week’s activity to the one immediately prior. While applications are still contracting, the smaller decline suggests some stabilization in borrower activity, even as higher borrowing costs and affordability pressures remain a headwind for the housing market. Investors and housing-market watchers are likely to view the easing pace of decline as a tentative sign that demand may be finding a near-term floor rather than accelerating downward.
