Poland Posts Largest Current Account Deficit on Record

Poland posted a current account deficit of €3,567 million in August 2026, the largest on record and a sharp increase from a revised €2,661 million deficit in the same month a year earlier. The goods trade deficit widened to €3,047 million, its highest level in more than four years, as imports grew by 15.4%, outpacing a 13.2% rise in exports. The primary income deficit also increased, reaching €3,780 million compared with €3,614 million a year earlier, mainly due to higher income outflows to foreign direct investors in Polish entities, as well as greater income payments on portfolio and other investments. At the same time, the services surplus narrowed to €3,003 million from €3,304 million. In contrast, the secondary income account shifted into surplus, registering €257 million after a deficit of €193 million in the previous year.
