Dutch Household Spending Growth at Over 1-Year High

In February 2025, household consumption in the Netherlands experienced a notable 2.1% year-on-year increase, up from a revised 0.7% rise the prior month. This signifies the most substantial growth since October 2023, driven by amplified expenditure in both goods and services. Goods spending surged to a 3.9% increase, compared to January's 0.5%, whereas services saw a moderate growth of 0.7%, slightly down from 0.9%. Within the services sector, there was a marked rise in expenditure on transport and communication. For goods, the most significant acceleration was observed in durable consumer goods, which rose by 3.1%, up from 0.6%, with notable increases in spending on clothing, shoes, and electrical equipment. Additionally, there was a sharp recovery in spending on other goods, which saw an impressive 9.3% jump from a previous decline of 1.8%, primarily driven by increased energy consumption due to colder weather. In contrast, the growth in spending on food, beverages, and tobacco decelerated, reflecting a modest 0.7% increase compared to the previous 2.5% rise.
