China Stocks Fall for Fifth Session

The Shanghai Composite fell 0.3% to below 4,040 on Wednesday, marking its fifth straight session of losses as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and volatile oil prices kept investors on edge. The conflict involving Iran intensified this week, with Tehran escalating attacks on regional energy infrastructure, while US allies rebuffed President Donald Trump’s appeal for assistance in securing shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump also asked China to postpone his summit with President Xi Jinping by about a month, citing the need to concentrate on the Iran crisis, having earlier tied any delay to Beijing’s willingness to help safeguard the strait. Clean energy shares led the market lower, with Sungrow Power down 2%, Contemporary Amperex off 0.9%, and BYD Company losing 1.8%.
