Canada Retail Sales Set to Rise in April

Retail sales in Canada are estimated to have risen 0.6% month-over-month in April 2026, based on a preliminary reading. If confirmed, this would represent the fourth consecutive monthly increase in retail activity.

In March, retail sales grew 0.9%, exceeding the initial estimate of a 0.6% gain. The upside surprise was driven largely by a 12.4% surge in sales at gasoline stations and fuel vendors, reflecting higher gasoline prices linked to supply disruptions stemming from the conflict in the Middle East. In volume terms, however, sales at gasoline stations and fuel vendors declined 1.9% in March.

Sales at automotive parts, accessories, and tire retailers also posted an increase of 2.2%. By contrast, sales at motor vehicle and parts dealers slipped 0.5%, led by a 4% drop in sales at used car dealers. Sales at new car dealers edged down 0.1%, following two consecutive monthly gains.
