XAU/USD, GOLD

Gold prices (XAU/USD) staged a modest Friday advance to trade around $4,065 per ounce, recording a 0.38% intraday gain as a slight retreat in US benchmark Treasury yields provided immediate support to the non-yielding metal. However, bullion’s upside potential remains tightly capped by persistent US Dollar firmness and growing market anxiety that an extended US-Iran conflict could ultimately fuel long-term inflationary pressures, keeping central bank policy restrictive and dimming gold's appeal. Despite the greenback holding firm—with the US Dollar Index (DXY) edging up to 101.46 to lock in a weekly gain exceeding 0.60%—the yellow metal found traction from a three-basis-point drop in the 10-year Treasury yield down to 4.667%. Geopolitical headlines from the Gulf region provided little scope for structural de-escalation, even as reports emerged that Pakistan is attempting to broker a resumption of US-Iran diplomatic talks at China’s urging. In response, US President Donald Trump signaled dwindling patience with Tehran while explicitly verifying that neither Beijing nor Moscow is providing military weapons or hardware to Iranian forces. Meanwhile, energy markets experienced a temporary reprieve as West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude tumbled 3.83% on Friday to settle at $88.79 per barrel, easing immediate cost pressures even though crude remains on track to close the week higher by more than 8.50% following earlier spikes in Brent crude above the $100 threshold. Economic releases added another layer of complexity to the fundamental backdrop. Light calendar data revealed that US private sector business activity remained resilient yet bifurcated; the S&P Global Manufacturing PMI ticked down marginally from 53.9 to 53.8, falling short of the 54.5 market forecast, while the Services PMI expanded rapidly from 51.2 to 53.6, easily beating expectations of 51.0 due to a surge in consumer demand driven by the World Cup hosted across the nation. Resilient domestic economic metrics and elevated energy prices have forced financial markets to aggressively reprice Federal Reserve rate expectations ahead of the July 29 FOMC decision. According to Prime Terminal data, money markets now assign a 59% probability that the Fed will leave interest rates unchanged next week, alongside an elevated 41% chance of an unexpected 25-basis-point rate hike. Looking further out to the September meeting, the implied probability of at least a quarter-point rate increase has surged to 84%. Beyond next week’s central bank gathering, market participants are bracing for an intense slate of high-impact macroeconomic indicators—including US Retail Sales, Durable Goods Orders, weekly jobless claims, second-quarter advance GDP growth figures, and the key Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) price index—all of which will dictate the medium-term trajectory of both the US Dollar and precious metals.

XAU/USD, GOLD

From a technical perspective, gold’s broader macro downtrend remains firmly intact, as the overarching market structure stays heavily compromised unless bulls can drive spot prices decisively above the June 17 cycle peak located at $4,382. Technical weakness is further confirmed by the price action trading beneath a converging cluster of key moving averages—including the 50-day, 100-day, and 200-day Simple Moving Averages (SMAs)—while aggressive sellers consistently force prices back beneath descending resistance trendlines. Momentum indicators reinforce this negative outlook, with the daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) remaining suppressed beneath its neutral midline, confirming that the path of least resistance continues to point lower. On the downside, the immediate technical floor is anchored at the $4,000 psychological handle, followed closely by the current year-to-date low at $3,941. A decisive breakdown beneath these critical support zones would expose gold to deeper liquidations toward the October 28, 2025, low at $3,886, with secondary long-term support lying at the major multi-month breakout zone of $3,500 established on April 22, 2025. Conversely, to establish a credible bullish recovery, buyers must first reclaim the $4,100 round figure, where a confirmed breakout would shift the focus toward the weekly high of $4,165 and the psychological resistance barrier at $4,200.
