US Consumer Spending Rises Steadily in December

US personal spending rose 0.4% month-over-month in December 2025, or by $91 billion, matching both November’s pace and market expectations. The increase was driven entirely by a $98.5 billion jump in services expenditures, led by higher spending on housing and utilities (+$29.4 billion), recreation services (+$20.9 billion), healthcare (+$20.5 billion), financial services and insurance (+$14.5 billion), and other services (+$10.9 billion). In contrast, spending on goods declined by $7.5 billion, reflecting reduced outlays on motor vehicles and parts (-$6.3 billion), other nondurable goods (-$2.9 billion), and clothing and footwear (-$2.4 billion).
