US Job Quits Tick Up

The number of Americans quitting their jobs inched up to 3.065 million in May 2026 from a revised 3.043 million in April, but remained well below the 3.287 million recorded a year earlier. The quits rate held at 1.9% in May, unchanged from April and marking the lowest level since 2020, underscoring muted voluntary job departures.

Quits rose most notably in accommodation and food services (+37,000); transportation, warehousing, and utilities (+32,000); professional and business services (+24,000); and the federal government (+4,000). The largest declines occurred in healthcare and social assistance (-35,000) and construction (-28,000).

By region, quits increased in the South (+45,000) and the Northeast (+34,000), while they fell in the West (-49,000) and the Midwest (-9,000).
