US Core Consumer Prices Unexpectedly Hold

Core consumer prices in the United States, which exclude food and energy, were flat in June 2026 compared to the previous month, following a 0.2% increase in May and falling short of market expectations for another 0.2% rise. It was the first month without an increase since January 2021. Prices declined for transportation services (-0.3% vs. -0.6% in May), apparel (-0.6% vs. +0.3%), and medical care services (-0.1% vs. +0.5%). Meanwhile, shelter costs edged up (0.1% vs. 0.3%). On an annual basis, core consumer prices were 2.6% higher.
