Australia Construction Extends Six-Month Contraction

The Ai Group Industry Index for Australia’s construction sector declined to -40.6 in July 2026, down from a downwardly revised -33.3 in June. This was the weakest result since March and the sixth consecutive month of contraction, underscoring a further deterioration in business conditions. Activity remained subdued due to delays in project approvals, persistent cost pressures, cautious client spending, a limited pipeline of tenders, and the completion of existing contracts. Businesses also reported that policy and regulatory uncertainty exacerbated fuel-related cost increases. At the same time, ongoing labour shortages continued to constrain capacity, while rising wage costs further intensified pressure on operating conditions across the sector.
