Japan’s Composite PMI Slips Marginally in July, Still Signals Ongoing Expansion

Japan’s combined Manufacturing & Services Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) edged slightly lower in July, easing to 52.70 from June’s 52.80 on a month-over-month basis, according to data updated on 5 August 2026.

Despite the marginal 0.10-point decline, the composite PMI remains comfortably above the 50.0 threshold that separates expansion from contraction, indicating that Japan’s private sector economy continues to grow. The July 2026 reading follows a similarly expansionary performance in the previous month, with the “previous” indicator—also measured as a month-over-month change—standing at 52.80 for July 2026 when compared to the month before it.

The latest figures suggest that while the pace of growth in both manufacturing and services has softened slightly, underlying business activity remains resilient. Markets and policymakers will be watching upcoming releases closely to assess whether July’s dip marks a temporary pause or the beginning of a more pronounced cooling in Japan’s economic momentum.
