Romania Industrial Output Decline Eases Slightly

Industrial output in Romania fell by 5.2% year-on-year in June 2026, easing slightly from a revised 5.4% decline in May, which had been the steepest drop since March 2025. The downturn moderated in mining and quarrying (-0.5% vs. -4.7% in May). By contrast, manufacturing contracted more sharply (-6.0% vs. -5.7%), dragged down by deeper declines in beverages (-9.8% vs. -8.9%), coke and refined petroleum products (-21.6% vs. -13.9%), chemicals and chemical products (-14.1% vs. -1.8%), pharmaceuticals and pharmaceutical preparations (-7.5% vs. -0.7%), and motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (-15.5% vs. -15.4%). The contraction in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply also intensified (-2.5% vs. -2.2%). On a monthly basis, industrial output decreased by a more moderate 0.7% in June, after a 2.8% drop in May. Over January–June, industrial production was 3.5% lower than in the same period a year earlier.
