Speculators Trim Bearish Bets on Canadian Dollar as Net Shorts Ease

Data from the latest Commitments of Traders (CFTC) report show that speculative sentiment toward the Canadian dollar has become slightly less bearish. As of 21 August 2026, net speculative positions in CAD narrowed to -158.2K contracts, compared with a previous reading of -173.4K.

The shift indicates that while traders remain net short on the Canadian currency, some bearish positions have been unwound. This moderation in negative sentiment could reflect changing expectations around Canada’s economic outlook, interest rate trajectory, or broader risk appetite in global FX markets. Nonetheless, the still-sizeable net short position suggests that confidence in a stronger Canadian dollar remains cautious for now.
