Baltic Dry Index Falls to Over 1-Week Low

The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which measures shipping rates for vessels transporting dry bulk commodities, fell for a second consecutive session on Friday, slipping 0.4% to 3,507 points, its lowest level since September 3. The capesize index, reflecting earnings for ships that typically carry 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal, also declined for a second day, down 0.7% to 6,080 points. The panamax index, which tracks vessels that usually haul about 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, edged down 0.1% to 2,407 points. In contrast, the supramax index rose 0.3% to 1,719 points. Overall, the benchmark index ended the week 3.3% lower.
