FX.co ★ Malawi Inflation Eases to Lowest Since 2022

Malawi’s annual inflation rate eased to 20.0% in August 2026, down from 20.8% in July, marking the lowest level since May 2022. The deceleration was driven by slower increases in both food and non-food prices. Food inflation, which remains the primary driver of overall inflation, fell to 13.4% from 14.3% in the previous month, reflecting moderating prices for cereals such as rice, maize, and maize flour. Non-food inflation also declined, to 31.8% from 32.2%, although prices of charcoal and firewood under the housing, water, and electricity category continued to put upward pressure on costs. On a monthly basis, consumer prices rose by 2.0%, unchanged from July, and remained at the fastest pace recorded in six months.
