Hungary’s Current Account Swings Back Into Deficit in Q2 2026

Hungary’s current account balance slipped back into deficit in the second quarter of 2026, reversing the modest surplus recorded at the start of the year. According to data updated on 25 September 2026, the current account moved from a surplus of €0.251 billion in the first quarter of 2026 to a deficit of €0.245 billion in the second quarter.

On a quarter-over-quarter basis, the latest reading marks a clear deterioration in Hungary’s external position compared with the previous quarter, when the balance had improved enough to move into positive territory. The new figures highlight renewed pressures on the country’s trade and income flows with the rest of the world, and will likely be watched closely by investors and policymakers assessing the sustainability of Hungary’s external accounts through the remainder of 2026.
