Hungary Current Account Swings to Deficit

Hungary’s current account posted a EUR 0.25 billion deficit in the second quarter of 2026, reversing from a EUR 1.4 billion surplus in the same period of 2025 and marking the first shortfall since the third quarter of 2023. The deterioration primarily reflected a broader goods trade deficit, which widened to EUR 0.93 billion from EUR 0.27 billion a year earlier, alongside a deeper primary income deficit, which increased to EUR 1.7 billion from EUR 1.6 billion. In addition, the secondary income balance shifted from a EUR 0.37 billion surplus to a EUR 0.64 billion deficit. These developments were partly offset by a stronger services surplus, which rose to EUR 3.1 billion from EUR 2.9 billion in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.
