Foreign Demand for U.S. Long-Term Securities Surges in August, Reversing July Outflows

Net foreign purchases of U.S. long-term securities swung sharply higher in August 2026, according to the latest Treasury International Capital (TIC) data released on 16 October 2026. The net long-term transactions balance climbed to $279.2 billion, a dramatic reversal from July’s net outflow of $27.9 billion.

The turnaround suggests a strong resurgence in foreign appetite for U.S. long-term assets, following the prior month’s negative reading. While the TIC data does not by itself explain the drivers, the shift from a modest net sale in July to a substantial net purchase in August signals renewed confidence or repositioning by global investors toward U.S. securities during that period.

Market participants will be watching subsequent TIC releases closely to determine whether August’s figure represents a one-off adjustment or the start of a sustained trend in higher foreign demand for U.S. long-term assets.
