China’s Housing Slump Eases Slightly as September Price Decline Narrows

China’s residential property downturn showed a modest sign of stabilization in September 2026, as the annual pace of house price declines eased. According to the latest data updated on 19 October 2026, nationwide house prices fell 2.8% year-over-year in September, compared with a 3.0% drop recorded in August 2026.

The figures, measured on a year-over-year basis by comparing each month to the same month a year earlier, indicate that while China’s housing market remains under pressure, the intensity of the price slump has lessened slightly. The previous reading reflected the August decline relative to August a year earlier, while the latest figure shows September’s movement versus the same month the year before.

Although prices are still falling on an annual basis, the narrower decline may be interpreted by market watchers as an early signal that the worst of the correction could be passing. However, with house prices remaining in negative territory, concerns about the broader economic impact of prolonged weakness in China’s real estate sector are likely to persist among investors and policymakers.
