The Baltic Exchange’s dry bulk freight index, which measures rates for vessels transporting dry bulk commodities, broke a three-session losing streak on Wednesday, advancing about 1.9% to 2,652 points. The capesize index—covering ships that typically carry 150,000-ton cargoes such as iron ore and coal—rose roughly 5% to a two-week high of 3,886 points, reversing three consecutive days of declines. The rebound was likely supported by firmer iron ore prices, as the resumption of Chinese steel mill operations and restocking activities strengthened expectations for increased seaborne cargo demand. In contrast, the panamax index, reflecting vessels that typically transport 60,000 to 70,000 tons of coal or grain, slid a further 2.8% to 1,965 points, its lowest level since late April. The supramax index also edged down 0.3% to 1,878 points, marking a one-week low.
