Uruguay’s Trade Deficit Narrows in September

Uruguay’s trade deficit narrowed to $35.3 million in September 2025, down from $124.4 million in the same month a year earlier. Exports rose 7.8% year-on-year to $1.14 billion, driven primarily by an 11.5% increase in manufacturing shipments. Within manufacturing, exports of food and beverages grew 5.8%, tobacco product exports surged 52%, and textile exports jumped 84.4%.

Exports of primary products increased 2%, as stronger sales of forestry and wood extraction products (+16.5%) more than offset declines in other subsectors. Utility exports were also higher, rising 2.4%.

On the import side, total purchases edged down 0.6% to $1.17 billion. Imports of intermediate goods posted the sharpest decline, falling 5.7%, largely due to a 53.3% drop in oil and distillate purchases. Imports of capital goods slipped 0.8%, weighed down by an 8.4% decrease in machinery and equipment. In contrast, consumer goods imports rose 9.9%, driven by a 28.1% increase in vehicle purchases.
