Switzerland’s consumer confidence index declined to -45 in October 2026, down from -37 a year earlier, signaling a marked deterioration in household sentiment and the weakest reading since November 2023. The drop was mainly driven by more negative assessments of both past and expected household finances, with the respective sub-indices falling to -54 from -41 and to -45 from -32. At the same time, views on the suitability of the moment for major purchases worsened to -33 from -26, and expectations for such purchases deteriorated further to -62 from -54, indicating increased caution among consumers. Expectations for overall economic development were broadly stable at -48, compared with -49 a year earlier. However, assessments of past economic performance weakened to -60, and expectations for unemployment rose to 69 from 64, underscoring mounting concerns about the labor market.
